At its core, sustainability is about safeguarding Moab’s unique natural resources and enhancing quality of life for present and future generations. Moab is already facing the effects of climate change, including hotter dryer temperatures which will likely increase the frequency and severity of extreme heat, drought, and wildfires while impacting the water supply. By 2050, the number of days above 90oF could nearly double to 87. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions can help mitigate the impacts of warming and identifying the anticipated impact of climate change on our community will help us build resilience as we prepare for the future.

There are two ways community members can participate:

1. Participate in the community Sustainability Action Plan survey to provide input on sustainability goals and strategies. The survey will be open from September 1 - 30, 2023.

2. Attend an in-person community sustainability event on November 1, 2023, to provide input and feedback on the draft plan as we prepare for adoption and implementation.

Survey input will shape priorities, goals, and strategies for the Sustainability Plan. It may also assist with connecting the plan to existing efforts within Moab and the surrounding area.

In 2009, Moab adopted the 2020 Vision: A Sustainable Moab Plan which included goals for water conservation, water reuse, energy efficiency, sustainable construction, retrofitting for sustainability, and community awareness. Building on this original plan, Moab developed a framework for sustainability action in 2019. While this framework was never fully adopted by City Council, community input gathered during that effort will be used to inform the Sustainability Action Plan. It is anticipated that the plan will be adopted by Moab City Council in December 2023 and serve as an actionable work sustainability work plan for the City.
