Project Activities*

The City of Moab has redesigned parking downtown to add 193 additional parking stalls, making more efficient use of the available space and helping to reduce congestion. The project will also improve options for visitors to walk to downtown businesses, provide more ADA parking options, and enhance the look and feel of downtown. This project is funded with recreation hotspot funding provided by the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to address congestion and parking issues in downtown Moab.

Project Schedule

Construction is anticipated to begin on February 12, 2024 and extend into the summer. Crews expect to begin work on Center Street between Main Street and 200 East and then on 100 East between 100 North and 100 South* while traffic and visitor numbers are lower.

Work is anticipated to begin with underground utility relocation or replacement, then concrete installation, followed by pavement restoration and striping. Landscape restoration, planting, and installation of other amenities (where applicable) are the final items.

Anticipated Impacts

Construction will impact adjacent residents and businesses, as well as the traveling public. The work will be phased to reduce those impacts where possible. Crews will work to maintain traffic whenever possible, however, you can expect traffic to be restricted to one-lane with flaggers at times.

Intermittent access closures may occur while utility or concrete work is underway. A safe walking route will be provided on one side of the block at a time.

Project Background and History

In 2019, the Moab City Council approved the Moab Parking Management Study to guide how parking concerns are addressed in the downtown area. Parking availability, relocation of parking following the recent U.S. 191 widening project, addressing the number of oversized vehicles and trailers, and safety considerations for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians were all considered. In 2020, it was agreed that the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) recreation hotspot funding would be used to address congestion by dispersing parking around the downtown area to increase overall parking by 193 stalls.

In 2022, the City of Moab team held two workshops for area business owners, residents, and property owners, and a public open house to gather input on the proposed design. The final design has incorporated much of this public feedback to help address some issues and concerns the public shared with the team.
